World’s Largest Round Barn
The World’s Largest Round Barn stands as a testament to Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage and architectural ingenuity. Constructed in 1916 by Frank A. Felhofer and his six brothers, this remarkable structure was designed to showcase purebred dairy cattle during the Central Wisconsin State Fair. Its unique circular design, measuring 150 feet in diameter and soaring 70 feet high, was achieved without the use of scaffolding—a feat accomplished by building from the ground up using a staging method.
The barn’s interior features 250 stanchions arranged in a circular fashion, allowing for efficient movement and display of livestock. The absence of interior support beams creates an unobstructed arena, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Constructed from a combination of white oak, red oak, hemlock, and pine, the barn is topped with a cupola and adorned with 88,000 shingles.
Today, the barn continues to serve its original purpose during the annual Central Wisconsin State Fair, hosting livestock shows and sales. It also accommodates various community events, including Dairyfest and ecumenical church services. Recognized for its historical significance, the barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Visitors can arrange guided tours of the barn for a nominal fee of $1 per person by contacting the Fair Office. The barn is available for rentals during the spring, summer, and fall seasons, offering a unique venue for events. Please note that the barn is not heated and is closed for rentals during the winter months.
